Ottawa Area Real Estate

Orléans City History

As a suburban area within the dynamic city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Orléans is conveniently located in the eastern part of the city along the beautiful Ottawa River. Within a short 16 km (10 miles) commute to downtown Ottawa, this 95,000-plus city first became a part of the city of Ottawa in 2001. Before 2001, Orléans encompassed two municipal jurisdictions, the eastern portion being in the pre-amalgamated city of Cumberland, the western portion in the city of Gloucester.

Orléans – French Roots Run Deep

Incorporated as a police village from 1922 to 1974, Orléans was traditionally known as St. Joseph d'Orléans. Apparently the name of the city of Orléans was inspired by one its main roads, Jeanne d'Arc Boulevard, a prominent thoroughfare around the community. To this day, Orléans has a prominent segment of French-speaking citizens, although the proportion of francophones has been decreasing of late. The spelling of Orléans with an acute accent in both English and French is due to the relevant regulation to the City of Ottawa Act, in an effort to maintain the area's francophone heritage.

OrleansOrléans Real Estate

Orléans has continued its steady growth as a suburban community since the late 1970s. Areas that are experiencing major growth include its southern and easternmost boundaries where development has included the building of new single-family homes and more commercial development. Because Orléans is an affluent suburb of Ottawa, larger single-family homes and some of the area’s finest schools are prominent factors in its growth and popularity.

What to do in Orléans

One of the more popular attractions is the Place d'Orleans shopping centre. Offering Orléans shoppers over 175 stores, this shopping destination is located just off the Queensway in Orléans. Other diversions in Orléans include the Elizabeth Manley skating rink at the Orléans Sportsplex. This facility is aptly named for Ms. Manley who trained here and won a Silver Medal in Women's figure skating in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.
