Rapid Residential Growth Comes to Barrhaven
Graced with abundant parks and
open space, Barrhaven can claim to be one of the
newest suburbs developed along the Greenbelt.
From his original 200-acre tract, Barr helped
fuel the rapid residential growth the area has
experienced although commercial development was
slower to gain traction. Today, much has changed
as the Barrhaven Town Centre retail complex provides
residents a combination of big box stores and
a variety of other commercial establishments,
including Re/Max Affiliates Realty Ltd. Indicative
of sizable growth experienced in Barrhaven, many
smaller shopping malls now dot the landscape.
High-tech employers began a migration in the area
in the 1990s as highlighted by corporations like
JDS Uniphase and Nortel. Recently, the RCMP announced
Barrhaven as the new home of their National Headquarters.
Superior Public Education in Barrhaven
As the area began to grow, the
need for superior public schools in the National
Capital Region increased. Barrhaven students got
their very own high school in 1998 when Mother
Teresa High School (Catholic) opened. Shortly
thereafter, the John McCrae Secondary School (public)
opened in 1999. Other schools followed, including
St. Joseph High School, another Catholic high
school, and a tremendous number and variety of
exceptional elementary schools.
